Triple Mix Soil
The perfect blend of topsoil, compost, and peat moss for thriving garden beds and healthy plant growth.
What is Triple Mix Soil?
Triple mix soil is a premium garden soil blend specifically formulated for planting. As the name suggests, it combines three essential components: quality topsoil, rich compost, and peat moss (or in some formulations, manure instead of peat).
The typical triple mix formula is approximately 1/3 quality topsoil, 1/3 composted organic matter, and 1/3 peat moss. This blend creates an ideal growing medium that provides the perfect balance of structure, nutrients, and water retention for most garden plants.
In Northumberland County, triple mix is the go-to choice for new garden beds, lawn renovations, and anywhere you want plants to establish quickly and thrive. The compost provides immediate nutrients, the peat moss improves moisture retention and aeration, and the topsoil provides the mineral base that supports long-term growth.
Key Properties
- Rich in nutrients: Compost provides organic feeding
- Excellent drainage: Prevents waterlogging
- Moisture retention: Peat holds water for dry periods
- Lightweight: Easy to work and spread
- Ready to plant: No amendments needed

Installation Tips
1. Calculate Properly
For new beds, you'll need 6-12 inches of triple mix. For existing bed amendment, 2-3 inches worked into the top 6 inches of soil is sufficient. Use our calculator to avoid over-ordering.
2. Prepare the Area
Remove weeds, grass, and debris before spreading triple mix. For lawn areas, consider sheet mulching or sod removal first. Loosen compacted subsoil if drainage is a concern.
3. Spread Evenly
Distribute triple mix evenly across the bed area. Use a garden rake to spread and create a level surface. Slightly mound the center of beds for improved drainage.
4. Water Thoroughly
Water the new soil deeply after spreading. This helps settle the mix and identifies any drainage issues before planting. Add more soil to low spots that settle.
5. Plant Soon
Triple mix is ready to plant immediately. The compost provides nutrients for the first growing season, though you may want to add fertilizer in subsequent years.
â Quality Indicators
Good triple mix should be dark brown, smell earthy (not sour or ammonia-like), and be free of large debris, rocks, and weed seeds. It should feel loose and crumbly, not sticky or sandy.
