Topsoil
The foundation of healthy landscapes - essential for filling, grading, and creating plantable ground.
What is Topsoil?
Topsoil is the upper layer of soil, typically the top 5-12 inches of the earth's surface. It contains the highest concentration of organic matter and microorganisms, making it the most productive layer for plant growth.
Commercial topsoil is harvested from construction sites, farmland, or dedicated soil processing facilities. Quality topsoil is screened to remove rocks, roots, and debris, resulting in a uniform material suitable for landscaping projects.
In Northumberland County, topsoil is used for everything from filling low spots in lawns to creating the base layer for new garden beds. It's important to understand that not all topsoil is equal - quality varies significantly based on the source and screening process.
Key Properties
- Natural composition: Contains mineral particles and organic matter
- Variable quality: Depends on source location
- Screened options: Available in various screen sizes
- Economical: Less expensive than garden mixes
- Versatile: Multiple landscaping applications

Filling Low Spots
Level depressions in lawns and yards. Screened topsoil provides fill that can be seeded or sodded over.
Grading
Establish proper drainage slopes around foundations and in yards. The base material for landscape grading.
Lawn Base
Create 4-6 inches of quality soil for new lawns. Top with compost or mix with peat for improved fertility.
Construction Backfill
Backfill around foundations, utilities, and landscaping features. Provides better drainage than native clay.
Garden Base Layer
Economical base for large garden beds. Top with 6 inches of triple mix or compost for planting areas.
NOT For Container Gardens
Garden soil is too heavy for containers. Use potting mix formulated for containers instead.
Installation Tips
1. Source Quality Soil
Ask about the source of topsoil before purchasing. Soil from agricultural land or dedicated processing facilities is generally better than construction site scrapings which may contain debris, weeds, or contaminants.
2. Check Screening
Specify screened topsoil for landscape use. 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch screening removes large rocks and debris while maintaining soil structure. Pulverized topsoil is very fine but can compact easily.
3. Test Before Major Projects
For large projects, request a sample or small delivery first. Check for debris, weed seeds, and texture. Quality topsoil should smell earthy, not sour or chemical-like.
4. Layer Appropriately
For lawn areas, spread 4-6 inches of topsoil over subsoil. For gardens, use topsoil as a base layer topped with 6-12 inches of improved garden soil or triple mix.
5. Settle Before Final Grading
Water newly spread topsoil thoroughly and allow it to settle for a few days before final grading. This reveals true levels and allows you to address any low spots.
⚠️ Quality Warning
Beware of "fill dirt" sold as topsoil: True topsoil contains organic matter and supports plant growth. Fill dirt is subsoil with little organic content and won't grow healthy plants without significant amendment.
