Pea Gravel

Small, rounded stones that create attractive, walkable surfaces for pathways, patios, and play areas.

What is Pea Gravel?

Pea gravel consists of small, rounded stones ranging from about 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch in diameter - roughly the size of peas, hence the name. These smooth, naturally rounded stones create a surface that's both attractive and comfortable to walk on.

The rounded shape of pea gravel allows the stones to shift and move slightly underfoot, creating a cushioned walking surface that's easier on joints than concrete or asphalt. This same characteristic provides excellent drainage, as water easily percolates through the gaps between stones.

In Northumberland County, pea gravel is a popular choice for informal pathways, patio seating areas, and under play structures. The neutral gray, tan, or brown tones complement most landscape styles and provide a natural, relaxed aesthetic.

⚠️

NOT For Driveways

Pea gravel moves too easily under vehicle tires. Use crusher run or clear stone for driveway applications.

Installation Tips

1. Excavation and Base

Excavate 6-8 inches for pathways. Install a 4-6 inch base of crushed stone or crusher run and compact thoroughly. This provides stability and prevents sinking.

2. Edging is Essential

Pea gravel spreads easily without containment. Install steel, aluminum, brick, or stone edging before adding gravel. This keeps the material in place and defines the space.

3. Landscape Fabric

Place landscape fabric over the compacted base before adding pea gravel. This prevents weeds while allowing drainage. Overlap fabric edges by 6 inches.

4. Proper Depth

Install pea gravel 2-3 inches deep over the fabric. This depth provides a comfortable walking surface while preventing stones from scattering. Deeper installation makes walking difficult.

5. Maintenance

Rake pea gravel periodically to maintain an even surface. Add material annually to replace what migrates or compacts. Remove leaves promptly to prevent decomposition and weed growth.

⚠️ Migration Warning

Pea gravel travels easily. Without proper edging, expect stones to scatter into lawns and adjacent areas. Regular raking and strong edging are essential for maintenance.
