Crusher Run
3/4" minus gravel that compacts into a solid base for driveways, heavy-use areas, and structural applications.
What is Crusher Run?
Crusher run (also called "crush and run," "3/4 minus," or "crush run") is a blend of crushed stone ranging from coarse 3/4-inch pieces down to stone dust and fine particles. This full range of particle sizes allows the material to compact and bind together when properly installed.
The mix of large and small particles creates a interlocking matrix that, when compacted, forms a solid, stable surface nearly as hard as concrete. The coarse pieces provide structural strength while the fines fill the gaps and bind everything together.
In Northumberland County, crusher run is the standard choice for residential driveways, parking areas, and as a base material for larger hardscaping projects. Its excellent compaction properties and load-bearing capacity make it ideal for areas that will support vehicles and heavy equipment.
Key Properties
- Excellent compaction: Binds together when compacted
- High load capacity: Supports vehicle traffic
- Good drainage: Water flows through the material
- Durable: Long-lasting even under heavy use
- Versatile: Used for bases and as a finished surface

Driveway Base
The most common application. Provides a solid, stable base that supports vehicle traffic without rutting or sinking.
Parking Areas
Ideal for creating parking pads and extending driveways. Compacts to support multiple vehicles.
Paver Base (Driveways)
Required base material for driveway pavers. Install 6-8 inches of crusher run topped with HPB or screenings.
Shed Foundations
Create a level, stable base for garden sheds and small outbuildings. Prevents settling and moisture issues.
Equipment Pads
Provides stable ground for heavy equipment, dumpsters, and temporary construction access.
Gravel Driveway Surface
Can be used as the finished surface for rural driveways. Affordable and holds up well to Ontario winters.
Installation Tips
1. Excavation
Excavate to proper depth accounting for crusher run thickness plus any surface material. For driveways, minimum 6 inches of crusher run is recommended, more for heavy vehicles or poor soil conditions.
2. Geotextile Fabric
Install geotextile fabric at the bottom of the excavation to prevent soil migration into the stone. This extends the life of your driveway significantly.
3. Layer Installation
Install crusher run in 3-4 inch lifts (layers). Spread each layer evenly with a rake before compacting. Installing too thick at once prevents proper compaction.
4. Proper Compaction
Use a plate compactor to compact each lift thoroughly. The surface should feel solid with minimal give when walked on. Add water lightly if material is too dry to bind properly.
5. Crown for Drainage
Shape the surface with a slight crown (higher in center) to shed water. A 1-inch drop per 4 feet of width is ideal for proper drainage.
💡 Pro Tip
For best results on new driveways, install crusher run in two 4-inch lifts rather than one 8-inch lift. This ensures thorough compaction throughout the entire depth.
