Concrete Sand
Coarse, washed sand essential for concrete mixing, paver bedding, and structural landscaping applications.
What is Concrete Sand?
Concrete sand (also called "sharp sand," "coarse sand," or "washed sand") is a specific grade of sand that has been washed to remove clay, silt, and organic matter. The particles are angular rather than rounded, which helps them bind together when compacted.
The particle size of concrete sand typically ranges from 0.25mm to 4.75mm, larger than masonry sand but smaller than aggregate. This specific size range makes it ideal for concrete production where it fills the voids between larger aggregate pieces while allowing cement paste to coat all particles.
In Northumberland County, concrete sand is the preferred bedding material under interlocking pavers and the standard sand component in concrete and mortar mixes. Its coarse texture provides stability while allowing for slight drainage.
Key Properties
- Angular particles: Binds together when compacted
- Coarse texture: Provides drainage and stability
- Washed clean: Free of clay, silt, and organics
- Consistent gradation: Reliable performance
- Versatile: Multiple construction uses

Paver Bedding
The standard bedding material under interlocking pavers. Provides a 1-inch layer that allows for final leveling and adjustment.
Concrete Mixing
Essential component of concrete mixes. The coarse particles create strong concrete when combined with cement and aggregate.
Screed Base
Used as a final screeding layer over HPB or screenings to create the perfect level surface for paver installation.
Base for Pool Liners
Provides a smooth, protective layer under above-ground pool liners while allowing for proper drainage.
Sand Layer for Sod
Mixed with topsoil or used as a thin layer to improve drainage in areas where sod will be installed.
NOT For Mortar
Too coarse for brick mortar. Use mason sand instead for mortar applications and between brick joints.
Installation Tips
1. Screeding Process
Lay two 1-inch diameter pipes on your compacted base material, 6-8 feet apart. Pour concrete sand between the pipes and use a straight 2x4 to pull the sand level, creating a perfect 1-inch bedding layer.
2. Work in Sections
Only screed as much sand as you can cover with pavers in the same day. Wind and rain can disturb exposed sand, requiring re-screeding.
3. Do Not Compact
The bedding sand should NOT be compacted before laying pavers. The loose sand allows for final adjustments. Compaction happens after pavers are installed.
4. Maintain Moisture
Very dry sand is difficult to screed evenly. Lightly mist extremely dry sand to improve workability, but avoid saturation.
5. Edge Restraint
Install edge restraints before screeding sand. This contains the bedding layer and prevents spreading during paver installation.
⚠️ Important
Don't use play sand or masonry sand: These are too fine and won't provide the stability needed for paver bedding. Always use coarse concrete sand.
Where to Buy Concrete Sand in Northumberland County
Concrete sand is available from building material suppliers:
- Building supply centers
- Landscape material yards
- Concrete suppliers
- Aggregate dealers

✓ Quality Check
Quality concrete sand should feel gritty, not powdery. If it leaves a film on your hands or clumps together when damp, it contains too much clay or silt.
