Concrete Pavers

Versatile, affordable paving stones that offer endless design possibilities for outdoor living spaces.

What Are Concrete Pavers?

Concrete pavers (also called "interlock pavers" or "paving stones") are pre-cast concrete units manufactured in specific shapes and sizes for use in patios, walkways, driveways, and other outdoor surfaces. Unlike poured concrete, pavers are individual units that interlock to create a flexible, durable surface.

Modern concrete pavers are manufactured to exacting standards using high-strength concrete, often with color integrated throughout the unit. This creates a product that can withstand freeze-thaw cycles, heavy loads, and decades of use while maintaining its appearance.

In Northumberland County, concrete pavers are the most popular choice for residential hardscaping due to their affordability, design versatility, and ease of repair. Available in countless colors, shapes, and textures, they can complement any architectural style from traditional to contemporary.

Types of Concrete Pavers

Standard Rectangular

Classic rectangular pavers in various sizes (4x8, 6x6, 6x9). Clean lines suit traditional and contemporary designs alike.

🔷

Cobblestone Style

Smaller units that replicate old-world cobblestone streets. Creates classic, elegant appearances for driveways and walkways.

⚙️

Interlocking Shapes

Specially designed shapes (Aqua, Dublin, etc.) that create unique patterns and provide maximum interlock for heavy loads.

🏛️

Slab Pavers

Larger format pavers (12x12, 16x16, 24x24) that create contemporary looks with fewer joints. Ideal for modern patios.

🎨

Textured Surfaces

Embossed textures replicate natural stone, brick, or slate. Adds visual interest and improved slip resistance.

🌈

Permeable Pavers

Specially designed with larger joints to allow water infiltration. Eco-friendly option that reduces stormwater runoff.

Installation Tips

1. Proper Base is Critical

Excavate to proper depth (paver thickness + 1" bedding sand + 10-12" base for patios, 15-18" for driveways). Install and compact HPB or crusher run base material thoroughly.

2. Edge Restraints

Install edge restraints around the entire perimeter before laying pavers. Plastic or aluminum edging secured with spikes prevents spreading and maintains pattern integrity.

3. Bedding Sand

Screed 1 inch of concrete sand over the compacted base. Use parallel pipes and a 2x4 to achieve perfect level. Do not compact the sand.

4. Laying Pattern

Start from a straight edge and work outward. Maintain consistent joint width (1/16 to 1/8 inch). Check level frequently and adjust by adding or removing sand beneath pavers.

5. Compaction and Joint Sand

After laying, use a plate compactor with a protective mat to set pavers. Sweep polymeric sand into joints and compact again. Activate polymeric sand with water according to manufacturer directions.

✓ Advantages Over Concrete

Pavers won't crack like poured concrete, are repairable if damaged, provide better drainage, can be relocated, and offer more design flexibility.
