Retaining Wall Blocks

Modular concrete blocks that make building attractive, durable garden walls and retaining structures achievable for any skill level.

What Are Retaining Wall Blocks?

Retaining wall blocks are pre-cast concrete units specifically designed for building vertical landscape structures. Unlike traditional masonry that requires mortar, modern retaining wall blocks use interlocking features, pins, or adhesive to create strong, stable walls without specialized masonry skills.

These blocks are engineered to handle the lateral pressure of soil behind them while creating attractive vertical elements in the landscape. They come in various sizes, textures, and colors to match different architectural styles and project requirements.

In Northumberland County, retaining wall blocks are used for everything from small garden walls to substantial retaining structures. Their modular nature allows for curved or straight walls, steps, corners, and columns, providing design flexibility for any landscape project.

Key Properties

  • Modular design: Uniform sizes simplify construction
  • Interlocking: Creates strong, cohesive walls
  • Textured faces: Mimic natural stone
  • High strength: Engineered for structural loads
  • Mortarless: Easier installation than traditional masonry

Installation Tips

1. Proper Base

Excavate a trench 6 inches deep and 12 inches wider than the block depth. Fill with 6 inches of compacted gravel (crusher run or HPB). Level carefully - the base determines everything.

2. First Course Level

Take extra time to ensure the first course is perfectly level in all directions. Use a dead blow hammer and level, adjusting with additional base material as needed.

3. Backfill Properly

Backfill behind each course with free-draining aggregate (clear stone or HPB). This is critical for drainage and wall stability. Never use soil as backfill.

4. Compact in Lifts

Compact backfill material in 6-8 inch lifts as you build. This prevents settling that could undermine the wall later. A hand tamper is sufficient for most garden walls.

5. Drainage is Critical

Install a perforated drainage pipe at the base of the wall behind the first course. Daylight the pipe to allow water to escape. Without drainage, walls fail.

⚠️ Height Limitations

Most DIY retaining wall blocks are rated for walls up to 3-4 feet without engineering. Taller walls require geogrid reinforcement and potentially professional engineering. Don't exceed manufacturer recommendations.
