Installation Tips
1. Proper Base
Excavate a trench 6 inches deep and 12 inches wider than the block depth. Fill with 6 inches of compacted gravel (crusher run or HPB). Level carefully - the base determines everything.
2. First Course Level
Take extra time to ensure the first course is perfectly level in all directions. Use a dead blow hammer and level, adjusting with additional base material as needed.
3. Backfill Properly
Backfill behind each course with free-draining aggregate (clear stone or HPB). This is critical for drainage and wall stability. Never use soil as backfill.
4. Compact in Lifts
Compact backfill material in 6-8 inch lifts as you build. This prevents settling that could undermine the wall later. A hand tamper is sufficient for most garden walls.
5. Drainage is Critical
Install a perforated drainage pipe at the base of the wall behind the first course. Daylight the pipe to allow water to escape. Without drainage, walls fail.
⚠️ Height Limitations
Most DIY retaining wall blocks are rated for walls up to 3-4 feet without engineering. Taller walls require geogrid reinforcement and potentially professional engineering. Don't exceed manufacturer recommendations.
